Frequently asked questions
Everything you might want to know about Fieldnote: how the tours work, what Fieldnote+ unlocks, where the stories come from, and how to reach a real person.
About Fieldnote
Is Fieldnote an audio tour app?
Yes. Fieldnote is a free audio tour app for self-guided walking tours, narrated by Iris. It works for fixed catalogue tours and for fresh tours Iris builds around where you are.
Who is Iris?
Iris is the voice and editorial sensibility behind every Fieldnote tour. She is curious, specific, and knows when to point at the street instead of reciting dates. Iris's voice is rendered by Google's Gemini TTS models; her cadence, point of view, and editorial choices are ours.
How does Fieldnote work?
Open Fieldnote, choose a 30-, 60-, or 90-minute walk, and start moving. Iris reads the ground around you, gives turn-by-turn prompts, tells you what to look at, and adds a passport stamp when the tour ends.
What does Fieldnote mean?
A fieldnote is what a researcher writes down on the spot: small, specific, captured before the experience turns into a memory. That's the kind of writing Fieldnote turns into audio while you walk.
Who builds Fieldnote?
Fieldnote is built by Aradeva Ltd, a small company registered in England and Wales. The same small team designs the app, builds the tours, tunes the audio, and answers support email.
Pricing and Fieldnote+
Is Fieldnote free?
Fieldnote is free to download, and a handful of tours are free for every user. Fieldnote+ unlocks unlimited catalogue tours, bespoke routes from Iris, full offline downloads, the longest 90-minute walks, and no ads.
What does Fieldnote+ include?
Fieldnote+ unlocks unlimited tours across the catalogue, bespoke routes Iris builds for you on request, full offline downloads, the longest 90-minute deep-dive walks, and an ad-free experience.
How do I cancel Fieldnote+?
On iOS, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, Fieldnote, and Cancel. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple or Google, depending on where you bought Fieldnote+. For Apple purchases, visit reportaproblem.apple.com. If something broke on our side, email hello@fieldnote.tours as well so we can investigate.
I'm being charged but the app says I'm on Free
Open Plan and billing in the app and tap Restore. If the entitlement still does not appear, email hello@fieldnote.tours with the address on your Fieldnote account and the store account you bought with.
Tours and content
Where do Fieldnote's audio tours come from?
Each Fieldnote tour is researched from public sources such as Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, and local archives, then shaped by Iris's editorial voice. Every published tour is reviewed before it ships.
Are Fieldnote tours AI-generated?
Yes, in part. Tours are drafted with help from large language models against curated public sources, then judged and reviewed for quality before release. Iris's editorial voice and what makes the cut are Fieldnote's.
I think a tour got something wrong. What do I do?
Email hello@fieldnote.tours with the destination, tour title, and what looks wrong. If you can point us at a source, that is especially helpful.
How long are the walks?
Most tours come in three lengths: 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Walk at your own pace and pause when you need to.
Are there tours where I am?
Usually, yes. The Explore page lists destinations with cached catalogue walks. Elsewhere, the app can generate a fresh tour when you arrive. If you want a destination prioritized, email hello@fieldnote.tours.
Devices, signal, and travel
Is Fieldnote available on iPhone and Android?
Fieldnote is iOS first and currently in TestFlight ahead of App Store launch. Android is on the runway. Join the list on the website and we'll send the link when your platform is ready.
Do Fieldnote's audio tours work offline?
Tours stream as you walk and keep playing if signal drops mid-walk. Fieldnote+ adds full offline downloads so you can save tours before a trip.
How do I save battery while walking?
Lock your phone instead of closing the app from the multitasker. Fieldnote is built to keep playing with the screen off. Headphones usually draw less power than the speaker.
Can I use Fieldnote abroad?
Yes. The app works anywhere there is tour coverage. Fieldnote+ offline downloads remove the need for signal during the walk, and the app includes an Airalo eSIM tab for local data.
Account and data
How do I change my email or name?
Open Profile in the app and tap the email or name row. Email changes ask you to verify the new address before they take effect.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, open Profile and tap Delete account. This removes your account, tour history, and passport stamps. The action is permanent. You can also email privacy@aradeva.com from the address on your account.
How do I unsubscribe from the newsletter?
Every newsletter email has a one-click unsubscribe link in the footer. This does not affect your Fieldnote account or transactional emails such as receipts.
What data does Fieldnote collect?
Fieldnote collects what is needed to run the app: your account email, tours you start and finish, passport state, crash diagnostics, and limited analytics for debugging. The Privacy page has the full breakdown.
Do you use cookies?
The marketing site is cookieless. After sign-in, Fieldnote uses first-party storage for app sessions, analytics, and support debugging.
Can I opt out of analytics?
The marketing site is already anonymous. For the mobile app and admin panel, email privacy@aradeva.com and we will delete what PostHog holds about your account.
Still have a question?
